I recently finished the fall workstudy program at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN. The basic exchange is 4 weeks of work for 4 weeks of classes.
Here's part 3 of some little summaries of all the classes I took:
3) Papermaking with Jo Stealey
Wow! Unlike the others, which were 1 week, this was a 2 week class and boy did it make a difference. Jo is an absolutely incredible teacher and joyful human. Jo started the class with a quick design study. We created pattern and texture on papers, traded around, painted, colored etc a couple different times. It was a great way to get warmed up and start making straight away.
The class was focused on creating sculptural forms with paper. We did a lot of mold making and basketry to achieve various goals. Here are some of my samples
My final project was relatively extensive. I created a paper mountain range, primarily of cast cones from funnels. Here is an in-progress shot.
